A Christian is a follower of Jesus Christ.
The first Christians called their faith “the
way”, and it is indeed a way of living, not just a set of beliefs. Jesus summed up the way in two simple commands:
love God and love your neighbour. Although that sounds simple, most of us find
that we cannot do that on our own, but only with God’s help. Jesus was not just a great religious teacher,
but he is also the key to the new relationship with God that we need in order to
live out his commands.
From the
beginning, those whose who came to Jesus found their lives were transformed as
they experienced God’s love in a new way, and were enabled to share that love
with others. That process of
transformation continues today in the Church, as we hear and reflect on his
words, and as we encounter him as a living presence when we break bread and
share wine in his name.
